Lab Work & Testing

Some medications require periodic lab monitoring. Lab orders must be provided by me before testing is completed.

Patients may complete ordered lab work at:

  • Quest Diagnostics or other Quest locations

  • Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham

    • Walk-in lab services may be available

    • Calling ahead is recommended to confirm hours and availability

  • Your primary care office or another laboratory of your choice

    • Please confirm they are able to complete the ordered testing

Patients are responsible for bringing or ensuring transmission of their lab order if required by the testing location.

Genetic Testing

In some cases, pharmacogenetic (genetic) testing may be discussed as part of medication treatment planning. These tests may provide information about how your body processes certain psychiatric medications and may be helpful when there have been side effects, multiple medication trials, or limited response to treatment.

Testing is optional and may be completed through companies such as:

Results are used as one part of the overall treatment process alongside symptoms, history, and prior medication experiences. Genetic testing does not predict which medication will definitely work best for you.

Insurance coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary. Patients are encouraged to contact the testing company directly for coverage and pricing information, as these companies are often able to help estimate potential costs before testing is completed.
